Thessaloniki Public Transport Authority (THEPTA)


The Thessaloniki Public Transport Authority is a public administration body of the Greater Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki under the Central Government Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks.

ΤΗΕPΤΑ was established in 2001 to operate as an executive board for the Thessaloniki greater area. Its main responsibilities include transport policy formulation for the Greater Thessaloniki Area, strategic transport planning, programming of interventions, as well as supervision and quality control of all of Public Transport Operators at thePrefectureofThessaloniki.

THEPTA’s main role is to define the public transport policy framework for the city and implement an integrated package of policy guidelines according to the formulated policies as well as to plan and promote mobility management measures.

THEPTA also has the functional supervision of OASTh, the sole private bus operator in Thessaloniki(operating under a contractual arrangement with the Hellenic Government). In the near future a Metro system which is currently under construction will operate under the supervision of THEPTA

THEPTA has participated or participates in many European projects and international fora as Flipper, Civitas Catalist, Sunrise, ATTAC and ECOTALE projects as well as UITP, EPOMM and EnergyCitiesNetworks.
